Moldova Overturns ’Gay Propaganda’ Law, Hopes to Join EU
The Moldovan government has overturned the country’s “homosexual propaganda” ban on Friday in order to gain membership to the European Union, Pink News reports.
Officials from Moldova, an Eastern Europe country between Ukraine and Romania, narrowly voted to eliminate the anti-gay law after being offered an EU Association Agreement at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius, Lithuania in November.
The ban was just passed in June, around the same time President Vladimir Putin signed Russia’s “homosexual propaganda” measure into law, and prohibited “relationships [other] than those linked to marriage and the family,” according to Pink News.
The decision to overturn the measure was opposed by Moscow officials and several Orthodox Christians in Moldova, who protested outside the country’s parliament building.
“Today they are allowing this propaganda and tomorrow they will allow gay marriages,” Orthodox priest Ghenadie Valuta told the AFP.
Pink News reported in March a court in Balti, Moldova’s second largest city, overturned a similar law that also banned “homosexual propaganda.”
