The organisation United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) has demanded Moldova explain the registration of Iranian tankers. UANI Executive Director Mark Wallace sent a letter to the President of Moldova, Nicolae Timofti, on September 15, Lenta.ru reports.

The letter says that 11 tankers of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) were sailing under the flag of Moldova. The company was hit by sanctions against Tehran in 2008.

Iran raised dozens of flags of Tuvalu, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Bolivia and Moldova on its ships in the summer. Sierra Leone, Tuvalu and Tanzania cancelled registering Iranian ships. Moldova cancelled it for 12 Iranian tankers in August. The Moldovan Deputy Minister for Transportation and Road Infrastructure, Boris Gerasim, insisted that not a single ship of Iran was sailing under the flag of Moldova.
